What We Actually Do in the Quitter Club

Follow Along:

My clients often come to me with an undeniable wish to quit. To quit feeling stressed, burnt out, unmotivated, and most importantly–lost. What they don’t often realize until we start working together, is that their desire to quit is a double-sided coin. A coin where the flip side of wanting to quit is wanting personal growth and fulfillment. After a year inside the Quitter Club–my annual coaching membership–I asked 3 members to share their results, takeaways, and greatest transformations from the work we did together. You don’t need to hear it from me. Here’s what they had to say about what we actually do in the Quitter Club:

Conquer Self Doubt

Meet Sarah: She was a stay-at-home mom for a decade who felt the itch to re-enter the workforce by launching her own business. She stumbled upon my podcast and free coaching calls, which gave her the nudge she needed to take the plunge. Professionally, she was ready to go all-in on her business, but her limiting beliefs were holding her back. Personally, she had battled depression and anxiety during the pandemic, and while therapy had helped to a certain extent, she was still missing the support she desired around taking on a new role as a business owner.

“Starting a business really felt like my only option… I needed flexibility. I needed to be able to be home with my kids. I need to be able to work at weird hours. But I was struggling with a lot of those thoughts about, ‘Is this it? Should I be doing this?’

Now I much more see [my business] as an experiment. Like, this is what I’m doing now. [Coaching] really helped me see that you can be ‘all in’ on something and it doesn’t have to be forever. You can burn it all down whenever you want. And that is so comforting. So I’m enjoying entrepreneurship much more because the mindshift takes all of that pressure off. Seeing it as an experiment and getting the learning out of it is a big mindset shift. That was a big, big takeaway for me from the beginning.”

Navigate Your Career

For Rithu: She had been part of my six-month program and found herself wanting to continue her thought-work journey in the Quitter Club. Rithu was at a crossroads in her career, contemplating taking a break and quitting her job. She saw the Quitter Club as a way to manage her mind amid the uncertainty and to gain clarity on her next steps. It wasn’t just about work; she wanted to explore new horizons and have the freedom to experiment with her life choices.

“I had decided that the best course of action for me was to take a career break and quit my job. Luckily, [Goli was] launching the Quitter Club around that time, which was perfect timing. I knew that the Quitter Club would help me for a couple of reasons. One was definitely, in addition to wanting to work with [Goli], I knew that there was a lot of uncertainty going into my future. And I needed to find a way to manage my mind around it. It just goes to show that no matter what option you choose, your brain is always going to [create doubts] and you’re going to have to find ways to tell yourself that you’re in control and find tools to be able to work with.

Prior to [joining the club], I was always very regimented with my career. I was very much like: step one, step two, step three. I had recently switched industries and I wanted to check in with myself and figure out what I wanted to do next. I never had that space, or had given myself the space to figure out what that is, and to really let myself fly.

It really allowed me to dig into things I just never knew that I was interested in. So with that I knew, ‘Okay, I want to take some time, take a break and just pause…when I do go into the job search, I know I just wanted to figure out what I want and to let myself experiment and mess around a bit.’ Before, I was a bit too precious with my career, and now it’s like, ‘Oh, it’s okay, if I want to be lost. There’s nothing wrong with that.’

In the beginning, it was mind blowing to me that I could even separate my thoughts from myself. I didn’t even know that there are thoughts versus reality. That blew my mind. I was like, ‘I can actually choose which thoughts to listen to. This is a game changer.’”

Reclaim Self-Worth

Meet Marissa: Marissa, like Rithu, had been in the Quitter Club for nearly a year. Her journey started with a feeling of despair and constant overwhelm, both professionally and personally. She realized that her self-worth had become intricately tied to her job, and she wanted to regain her sense of self. Marissa learned to set boundaries, prioritize her personal life, and stop working late into the evenings. As a result, her professional life not only survived but thrived.

“I came to this looking to find some hope in my life. I listened to one of your podcasts and it was about guilt. And it just struck me so hard that I didn’t even realize I was choosing that emotion, or that my mind was going there.

I’ve been working with [Goli] intermittently for almost two years now. I didn’t know what I wanted. I wanted to find a path forward where I felt less overwhelmed. I didn’t come in with a preconceived notion of finding a different job or quitting my job. I’ve been with my company for 15 years and had most of my professional career there and feel like it’s a good place for me. I didn’t know if I needed to leave to find a better life or find a more whole life. So where I am now is managing my mind around my current job and company, with no plans of changing it anytime soon because I’ve come to this place where managing my mind has helped me regain who I am.

I was always so concerned with others in what they were perceiving me as and expecting everyone else to take work as seriously and as importantly as I did. A lot of my challenge came through expectations I was putting on others wanting them to want what I want for them. Now I’m in a place where I have done some manual boundaries. I’ve taken up personal hobbies and stopped working late into the evenings. I have started to balance my professional life with my personal life. And, surprisingly, my professional life is not suffering. If anything, it is flourishing because I’m able to walk away and come back with a fresh mind. I feel like I can breathe.
